The Taj Mahal is an iconic monument situated in the Indian city of Agra. Commissioned by Shah Jahan, the fifth emperor of the Mughal dynasty, the construction of this monument was undertaken as a testament of love for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died at the early age of thirty-nine giving birth to her fourteenth child.

Beginning in 1632, the construction of the Taj Mahal spanned over approximately twenty-two years and involved the collaboration of thirty-seven experts and twenty thousand workers hailing from India, Persia, the Ottoman Empire, and Europe. The team included notable figures such as Ahmad Isa Khan and Muhammad Effendi as Chief Architects, Abdul Karim as Chief Accountant and Amanat Khan as Master Calligrapher.

The Taj Mahal is two hundred and forty feet tall. The dome measures sixty feet in diameter and is eighty feet in height. The four minarets framing the main structure appear perfectly perpendicular to the ground but are strategically tilted outwards. This design ensures that, in the event of an earthquake, their fall would not pose a threat to the integrity of the main building.

The Taj Mahal stands as a source of pride for every Indian, drawing approximately seven million visitors from around the world. It is renowned among tourists for the opportunity to capture poses with its backdrop.

Our journey through Agra not only offered a glimpse into the history and architecture of the Taj Mahal but also provided insights into the tourism scene of the region. The cultural and historical significance of this structure continues to make it a symbol of India’s rich heritage and a must-visit destination for travellers.
