Perched high in the Western Ghats, where the air is crisp and the valleys are blanketed in soft, ethereal fog, lies Mahabaleshwar. During our visit, we had a great time exploring this magical place.

Tucked away in the misty Sahyadri mountain range, Mahabaleshwar was a paradise where time seemed to slow down. Did you know that Mahabaleshwar features a famous cliff named Elephant’s Head Point, where the rock formation looks just like an elephant’s head and trunk when viewed from far away?

Located in Satara district, it serves as a critical area for rural development under the Panchayati Raj system. We came to know that the town has two parts: Old Mahabaleshwar and New Mahabaleshwar, separated by the Brahmaranya forest. Centred on Dr Sabne Road, the main market avenue stretches over a kilometre. Vehicles are restricted here in the evenings, making it a peaceful, pedestrian-friendly place for a stroll. It was the best place for dining, fresh strawberries, and leather goods. We were fascinated to learn that Mahabaleshwar produces over 80% of India’s strawberries! This historical hill station captured the heart of every traveller with its vast, undulating valleys, cascading waterfalls, and cool, pine-scented air.

Mahabaleshwar is also considered a revered Hindu pilgrimage site. It is the starting point for five holy rivers: the Krishna, Koyna, Venna, Savitri, and Gayatri. Inside the ancient Panchganga Temple, the water from all five holy rivers trickles out together directly from the stone mouth of a carved cow statue (called a Gaumukh)!
