Block printing is a traditional art form practised in Jaipur for generations, with its roots deeply connected to Rajasthan’s cultural heritage. It is a technique used in the textile industry, where artisans use carved wooden blocks coated with dye to create beautiful designs on fabric.

During our Jaipur journey, we had the opportunity to try this traditional craft in Sanganer, which is famous for its delicate floral block prints. We used different wooden blocks with elegant patterns that reflected the culture of the Pink City. We put our creativity to the test by printing designs inspired by nature, such as flowers, leaves, and birds, on pieces of cloth using non-toxic colours. Through this activity, we realised that even a simple wooden block requires skill, patience, and careful placement to create a complete pattern.

This traditional craft provides livelihood opportunities for skilled artisans in Jaipur. In this digital era, where people often depend on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for creative ideas, we sometimes forget the importance of using our own creativity and knowledge. Through block printing, we developed our artistic skills and experienced the satisfaction of creating something with our own hands. This hands-on experience helped us understand the effort behind handmade textiles and why such skills should be preserved and passed on to future generations.
