Aurangabad was founded by Malik Ambar, the Prime Minister of Ahmadnagar Sultanate, in 1610. The city was fortified with 52 gates, which is why it is also known as the “City of Gates.” Before Aurangabad, the city was called Khadki, which literally translates to the window. In 2023, the city was officially renamed Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
On the first day of our trip, we visited and learnt about the replica of the Taj Mahal, Bibi ka Maqbara. It is a tomb that was built in 1661, nearly 30 years after the Taj Mahal. We saw many original paintings inside the tomb. Unlike the Taj Mahal, only 20% of BIbi ka Maqbara is made of marble. It took 1500 workers per day to build it.
On our second day, we explored the incredible Ajanta Caves. We visited five caves in total. We started by visiting cave number 19, which was built during the Mahayana phase of Buddhism. It was full of Buddhist architecture, carvings, and geometrical paintings. Each pillar of the cave was packed with rich history and culture, portraying stories of Buddha. Cave number 2 and 10 were the largest caves we visited. Lastly, cave number 3 and 13 had life-sized elephant statues built on the sides of the main entrance.
In conclusion, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is a city that represents India’s rich cultural heritage. It survived the rise and fall of various dynasties but still stands strong. Ajanta Caves are also a testament to India’s incredible art and intellect.
