The Unsung Heroes of Jallianwala Bagh

We visited the historic Jallianwala Bagh during our journey to Amritsar. We had only heard about its history but seeing it in person helped us realise just how horrifying the Jallianwala Bagh massacre actually was.

Jallianwala Bagh’s story happened on the day of Baisakhi on Sunday, 13th April 1990. Thousands of people had gathered at the Jallianwala Bagh for a political meeting to protest against the controversial Rowlatt Act. British Brigadier General Dyer reached the venue with 50 riflemen, blocked the only entrance/exit, and ordered them to open fire.

In just 10 minutes, over 1000 people were brutally killed, and many more were injured. This act of violence shocked the conscience of the nation and left a deep scar in the hearts of Indians. The massacre marked a turning point in India’s fight for independence and it fuelled widespread anger and resentment against British rule. It led leaders like Mahatma Gandhi to intensify the freedom movement demanding justice and self rule. Today, Jallianwala Bagh stands as a symbol of the sacrifices made by Indians in their quest for freedom and serves as a poignant reminder of the brutality of colonial rule.

We felt inspired by India’s freedom fighters who brought us our hard earned independence. Many, like the ones who were present in Jallianwala Bagh, were common people who had decided to fight for their freedom. The legacy of Jallianwala Bagh remains etched in history, reminding us of the price of oppression, and the resilience of those who fought for justice.
