Coorg is located on the slopes of the Western Ghats and is also known as Kodagu. It is a beautiful hill town in Karnataka, which can only be accessed by road. Coorg is bigger than Goa, and it is known for its unique flora and fauna, pepper, and coffee.
One of the most prominent aspects of Kodagu culture is that they have a unique system known as the Koota system. The Kodava people have a distinct traditional attire where the women pleat their saree on the back and the men wear long kurta called ‘Kupya’. Their cuisine is also delicious, with dishes such as Pandi curry and Kabumbut.
In the past, Coorg has been under the rule of many dynasties of the south of India such as Cholas, Changalvas, Kadambas and Pandyas. The Halari Kings ruled Coorg for over 200 years from 16th to 19th century and played a significant role in shaping its cultures and traditions. During the British colonial period, Coorg was a separate province and the British focused on developing the coffee cultivation in the region. Coorg was also actively involved in the Indian independence movement. The Namdroling Monastery is also a must-visit site in Coorg, and it is situated just an hour away from Abbey Falls.
In short, Coorg is a place with diverse cultures, rich history, delectable cuisine and a booming trading commerce. It was an exciting journey as we enjoyed the beautiful landscapes and learnt a lot.
