“Their roar is around me. I am on the brink
of the great waters—and their anthem voice
Goes up amid the rainbow and the mist.”
The above extract is taken from a poem about Niagara Falls composed by Grenville Mellen. This quote perfectly encapsulates the experience of witnessing the majestic waterfall. The cool breeze blowing and the mist that covered our faces made us feel so calm that it is difficult to describe it in words. Amidst all the chaos and hurry of city life, we often forget to appreciate the beauty of nature around us.
When we visited Niagara Falls in the course of our educational trip, we were stunned by its picturesque beauty. During our visit, we learnt a number of facts about Niagara Falls. We got to know that Niagara Falls forms the international border between the USA and Canada. Also, Niagara Falls is a combination of three waterfalls, namely American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Horseshoe Falls. The power stations of Niagara Falls produce a quarter of all electricity used in New York (the USA) and Ontario (Canada).
To view Niagara Falls from a closer spot, we boarded a ferry, which is called the Maid of the Mist. The ferry consists of two floors. From the top level, we were able to closely witness the most heavenly scenic beauty of the waterfall instead of first or bottom level, to shield ourselves from the strong blow of heavy mist-laden wind. Nonetheless, it was extremely windy and we enjoyed getting soaked in the slight drizzle of water. Although we were wearing raincoats, our faces were covered with icy mist all over. Feeling the mist on our faces was a mind-blowing experience that made us all joyous. We clicked many photographs with Niagara Falls in the backdrop. The experience with friends of moving around on the ferry for clicking photographs in front of the waterfall was one of the most enjoyable experiences.
Niagara Falls is certainly one of the most beautiful creations of nature. While looking at Niagara Falls, all of us realised how powerful nature can be. We were able to connect with the power that nature has within itself — the power to calm human aggression and the power to spread happiness among living beings. We really enjoyed visiting Niagara Falls as we experienced nature at its best.
