Also known as Amba Vilas Palace, Mysuru Palace is located in the heart of Mysuru city and is one of the most prominent places visited in India. This tourist destination attracts a few million visitors each year and comes to light during the festival of Dussehra celebrated in the month of October. Built originally in the 14th century by the Wodeyars, this palace has been reconstructed and renovated several times.

The palace is housed within the old fort, which is situated very close to the famous Chamundi Hills. It was the official residence of the Wodeyar Dynasty who ruled the kingdom of Mysore from 1399 to 1950. When the palace was struck by lightning in the early 17th century, it was rebuilt after many years. By 1803, the palace was constructed in Hindu style by the reigning ruler, Krishna Raja Wodeyar III. Later, it was again destroyed by a fire in the late 19th century. Then, it was reconstructed by the British architect, Henry Irwin in 1912.

The highlight of this palace is the two Durbar Halls, which display the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture. The palace also has many courtyards and gardens, which speak volumes about the Wodeyar Dynasty. You cannot help but get spellbound by the intricate designs and paintings that you will find all around the palace.

Key pointers (my observations) for anyone planning a visit:

1. The gardens that surround the palace add to the beauty of this place.

2. The courtyards inside the palace exhibit a three-storeyed structure.

3. Some of the paintings that you can find inside the palace reflect the lives of rulers during the early 19th century.

4. The temple that you will find on the way towards the exit provides an auspicious way to end the tour.
