Our journey to TERI’s TRISHA Bio Farm in Supi gave us an opportunity to understand how nature contributes to our lives beyond its scenic beauty. Established in 2003, the initiative focuses on improving local livelihoods by integrating modern agricultural technologies with traditional farming practices and promoting sustainable development in the Himalayan region.

We learnt about several plants, such as lemon balm, traditionally used to relieve stress and mild discomfort, and Taxus baccata, a tree associated with compounds used in certain cancer treatments. Another interesting plant was Buransh (Rhododendron), Uttarakhand’s state tree, whose flowers are used to prepare a refreshing local drink. We were welcomed with this flavourful juice, which gave us a taste of the region’s traditional food culture. We also learnt about Congress grass, an invasive plant that competes with native vegetation. Another fascinating experience was observing polyhouses and greenhouses that provided controlled conditions for growing crops. The steam distillation process was equally interesting, as we saw how steam was used to extract essential oils from aromatic plants. At the same time, condensation helped collect the resulting oils and floral waters.

We were fascinated to see how science and technology were being used to improve agricultural practices and support local communities. At Kumaon Vani Radio Station, we had the opportunity to interact with radio presenters and record our experiences for broadcast. Our visit gave us a deeper understanding of how nature, scientific research, and sustainable agriculture contributed to the development of local communities.
