The Ajanta caves are a fine example of the beautiful art of rock-cutting, storytelling, and history. Located in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, they date back to the 2nd and 1st centuries BC and are home to masterpieces of various art.

The Ajanta Caves are a group of 30 rock-cut caves and a renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are mentioned in the memoirs of several medieval-era Chinese Buddhist travellers. After a trailblazing journey, we reached the main location of the caves, which has a horseshoe-shaped bend in the mountain. While some caves were old, some of them were of more recent origin. The difference could be identified by the style of painting and carvings. We were captivated by the stories explained through the paintings. For example, many of the stories are depicted through ancient Indian mural paintings and sculptures, the most prominent being the Jataka tales.

The caves not only explained the history of religion, but inscriptions revealed how kings, ministers, and merchants funded them. This showed cultural refinement, devotion, and worship in support of Buddhism. We learnt how ancient trade routes attracted monks, traders, pilgrims, and artisans. The caves generated employment for sculptors, painters, labourers, and craftsmen. Today, the Ajanta caves fuel tourism and local livelihoods, standing as a reminder of our rich cultural history. To sum up, our visit proved to be a valuable learning opportunity, as we gained insight into the cultural diversity and historical significance of the Ajanta caves. We gained insight into the thought process of the monks who decided to build these caves. The ideology they wanted to build upon now lies eternally in the hearts of every visitor who explores these caves. For us, being part of that enriching experience was special.
