During our journey to Jaipur, we had the opportunity to experience the traditional crafts of blue pottery and block printing. These are two of the most mesmerising art forms found in Jaipur. Both are unique and creative in their own ways.
We first learnt about blue pottery. It is called “blue pottery” because of the vibrant blue colour used in its designs. We created beautiful designs by painting on the pottery given to us and observed that the paint dried very quickly. We were told that this art originally came to Jaipur from Persia and was later developed by local craftsmen.
Next, we tried block printing. We were given a delicate white piece of cloth and wooden stamps with beautiful patterns carved on them. We soon learnt that the colours used in block printing are sourced naturally from flowers, vegetables, and other natural elements. Our guide informed us that printing always starts from left to right, and each block must be placed carefully to make sure the design looks neat. We were amazed to see how handmade printing can look so perfect.
Both these art forms are traditionally famous in Jaipur. We also met other students who participated and enjoyed the same activities. Everyone from our school enjoyed learning these crafts. We made many memories that we will cherish forever. These workshops introduced us to the traditional crafts and cultural heritage of Jaipur. We now understand why Rajasthan is famous around the world for its art and tradition. A big thanks to EdTerra for organising this wonderful educational journey.
