Visiting a temple adorned in gold and embraced by the beauty of a pond may sound like a fantasy, but for us, the students of Shiv Nadar School, Gurugram, it became a reality. We had the unique opportunity to visit the iconic Golden Temple in Amritsar and fulfill this fantasy.

The Golden Temple was initially built in 1604 by Guru Arjan, the fifth Sikh Guru. Unfortunately, in the 1760s, the temple faced destruction after it was repeatedly sacked by the Afgan invaders. It was eventually rebuilt in marble and copper and was covered with gold foil during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1801-39).

The revered Golden Temple is said to have transformed the lives of many. Beyond its significance as a place of devotion for the Sikhs, the temple’s beauty and serenity has the power to rejuvenate all who visit. Whether rich or poor, all individuals are treated equally here. A testament to this spirit of inclusivity is the institution of ‘Guru Ka Langar,’ where free food is generously provided to approximately twenty thousand people every day.

Visiting the Golden Temple in Amritsar feels like a magical journey coming to fruition. Upon approaching the main building, as per the ritual, we were asked to remove our shoes and cover our heads with a piece of cloth. All these simple gestures have become a memory that we will cherish for a lifetime. This visit imparted a profound understanding of the true spirit of spirituality in us. We hope that someday, you too get a chance to experience this.
