Jaipur, the “Pink City” of India, is known for its distinctive handicrafts, and one craft that fascinated us was hand block printing. During our visit, we learnt that this traditional art has been practised in and around Jaipur for around 500 years and continues to connect people with India’s textile heritage.

We explored how hand block printing is done on cloth using carved wooden blocks dipped in dye. The artisans press these blocks by hand again and again to create beautiful patterns on fabric. We realised that the process is not as simple as it looks. It includes preparing the fabric, carving the blocks, dyeing, printing, washing and drying. Each step requires patience, skill and precision. We also learnt that natural dyes and minerals have traditionally been used in this craft, making it closely connected with nature.

In Jaipur and its surrounding areas, we came to know about two common styles of block printing: Bagru and Sanganeri prints. Bagru prints are known for earthy colours, natural dyes and bold patterns, while Sanganeri prints are recognised for delicate floral designs and bright colours, mostly on lighter fabrics.

During our hands-on experience, we were inspired by the hard work and care that artisans put into every piece. We understood that each printed cloth carries not only a design, but also the creativity and effort of the people who make it. Jaipur’s block-printed textiles are admired in India and across the world. This experience helped us appreciate how India’s rich culture continues to live on through art, creativity and craftsmanship.
