Sri Harmandir Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple, is considered the holiest gurdwara and the most important pilgrimage site for Sikhs. As we walked through the Golden Temple, we discovered that it has four entrances facing the four directions: east, west, north, and south. This symbolises that people of all faiths and communities are equally welcome.

While exploring the Golden Temple, we learnt that Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Sikh Guru, supervised its construction and helped make it a central place of worship for the Sikh community. According to tradition, Hazrat Mian Mir Ji, a respected Sufi saint, laid its foundation stone, showing the shrine’s message of harmony and respect among faiths. The shrine was completed in 1604, and Guru Arjan Dev Ji installed the Adi Granth, the holy scripture of the Sikhs, inside the temple in the same year. After attacks in the 18th century, the temple was rebuilt, and in the early 19th century, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the Sikh ruler of Punjab, covered its upper structure with gold.

We found the temple unique because it stands in the middle of the sacred Amrit Sarovar. Its golden reflection in the water looked peaceful and spectacular, and the sight will stay with us for a long time. We also learnt about the Five Ks of Sikhism: Kesh, Kanga, Kada, Kachera and Kirpan. These articles helped us understand how Sikhs express their faith, discipline, cleanliness, courage, and commitment to truth.

For us, the Golden Temple was not just a monument. It was an experience that touched our hearts. The prayers, hymns, and selfless service inside Sri Harmandir Sahib helped us understand its message of equality, peace, humanity, and unity.
