Our school’s collaboration with EdTerra Edventures gave us a wonderful opportunity to learn beyond the classroom. During our journey to Kanatal, our team, Saturn, got the opportunity to explore the world of astronomy, space exploration, and the beauty of natural trails. As young scientists, we believe that the mysteries of the universe should be explored with curiosity and dedication. Hence, EdTerra Edventures engaged us in various astronomy activities. Our first activity was about solving the mystery of sunspots. Through telescope observation, we understood that sunspots are temporary dark regions on the Sun’s surface. They appear darker because they are cooler than the surrounding areas. This happens because strong magnetic fields disturb the flow of heat.

Our second activity was stargazing, where we observed stars and planets in the sky. First, we saw Venus, often called the Evening Star or Morning Star, depending on its position in the sky. We observed its bright appearance and learnt that it was in the Gibbous phase. Next, we saw Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system. We observed its brown bands, which are cloud bands in Jupiter’s atmosphere, and also spotted the four Galilean moons. We learnt about the scale of the universe and understood the vast distances between planets and other celestial bodies.

During another session, we discussed astrophysical phenomena such as black holes, strong gravity, and time dilation, which means that time passes slowly near objects with very strong gravity. Lastly, we explored the magic of hydro-rockets. We made a rocket using a plastic bottle and launched it with water pressure. This activity helped us understand Newton’s Third Law of Motion, which states that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. In the end, we realised that the universe is vast, and there is still so much to discover. This experience taught us that in space, even the smallest visible things can have the biggest meaning.
