Time is an invaluable gift of nature, without which nothing can be done precisely. In order to measure this gift during the medieval period, Rajput king Sawai Jai Singh II, a passionate astronomer, built five Jantar Mantar observatories across India. Out of these five, four observatories still exist today. The largest and most famous one of these is located in Jaipur.

Jantar Mantar in Jaipur is a collection of 19 astronomical instruments. One of the most remarkable instruments there is the world’s largest stone sundial, Samrat Yantra. It tells the local time with a surprising accuracy of up to two seconds. There are other instruments like the Yantra Raj (King of Instruments), which is a vertically hanging circular astroblade made of a huge seven-alloy metal disc of over 2.43 metres in diameter. It was used to track planetary movements and read people’s horoscopes. The royal astrologer used to name newborn children and predict their fate using this instrument.

There is also an instrument called the Nadivalaya Yantra, which helps determine whether a heavenly body is in the northern or the southern hemisphere. While tracking the position of the sun, it also measures local time. Additionally, there is a smaller sundial called the Laghu Samrat Yantra, similar to the larger Vrihat Samrat Yantra, which measures time within an accuracy of 20 seconds. Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II was truly a brilliant astronomer with great ambition for his kingdom and subjects.

In conclusion, Jantar Mantar is a significant astronomical and historical site in India. It is home to incredible artifacts that give India a high standing in world history, making this place an important site for the study of astronomy.
