The Genius of Sawai Jai Singh II

Sawai Jai Singh II was a visionary ruler and a true scholar. In 1699, he ruled the throne of Amber at the tender age of 11, following the demise of his father. Despite his formal education coming to an end at the age of 13, he pursued his passion for astronomy and mathematics with unwavering dedication. He went on to design the remarkable Jantar Mantar, a collection of astronomical instruments that were accessible to all, regardless of their level of knowledge.

Sawai Jai Singh’s achievements extended far beyond his contributions to astronomy and mathematics. Under his leadership, Jaipur emerged as India’s first planned city in 1727, thanks to his keen attention towards the city’s safety and security. This remarkable feat of planning resulted in a well-organised city, complete with palaces, forts, and well-laid roads. The city was built according to the principles of Vastu Shastra, an ancient Indian architectural philosophy.

Sawai Jai Singh’s interests spanned a broad range of disciplines, including astronomy, mathematics, astrology, and architecture. He commissioned the construction of the Jantar Mantar observatories in Jaipur which is one of five such observatories that he built in India. The Jantar Mantar in Jaipur is the largest and most famous of the five observatories. It consists of 19 instruments, including the Samrat Yantra, which is the world’s largest sundial.

In addition to his contributions to astronomy and architecture, Sawai Jai Singh II was also a skilled warrior and a patron of the arts. He commissioned the building of many temples, palaces, and gardens in Jaipur.
