Shimla has a rich heritage from the colonial era in India, which mesmerises tourists. The history of Shimla is mainly associated with the residences of the British Viceroys in India. Shimla served as the summer capital of British India from 1864 until independence. During our journey, we visited many fascinating places. The first was the Viceregal Lodge, now known as Rashtrapati Niwas, located on Observatory Hill in Shimla. It was built between 1880 and 1888 as the summer residence of the British Viceroy, Lord Dufferin. The 1945 Shimla Conference, which led to the 1947 partition, was held at this lodge. It was later converted into the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS) and houses a heritage museum. Its enchanting interiors left us in awe!

The next visit was to the Apple Orchard, which also served as a kind of apple museum for us. It featured diverse wildlife. We tracked various tree species and discovered different varieties of apples there. Third, and the most thrilling, was Shimla’s Mall Road. It is lined with many shops. The landmark building of the city was Christ Church on the Ridge. It is the second-oldest church in North India. Constructed by the British and completed in 1857, the church’s architecture features stained-glass windows and a large clock tower.

The experience made us realise that every old building has a history. We need to preserve this great legacy for future generations. The EBSB (Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat) trip has enriched us with memories and knowledge for a lifetime.
