The Statue of Liberty is one of the most famous symbols of liberty and freedom in the world. Located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, it was a gift from the people of France to the United States in 1886. It was meant to celebrate the friendship between the two nations and the shared ideals of democracy and human rights.

We learnt that the Statue of Liberty was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, with the metal framework being built by Gustave Eiffel, who is also known for designing the Eiffel Tower. The statue stands over 300 feet tall (including its pedestal). We were in awe as we observed Lady Liberty, who held a torch in her right hand, representing enlightenment, and a tablet in her left hand. The tablet had an inscription that read 4 July 1776, the date of American independence.

Overall, the Statue of Liberty has welcomed millions of immigrants arriving by sea and remains a powerful symbol of hope, freedom, and opportunity. We were intrigued by the crown of the Statue of Liberty which had seven rays. We were told by our guide that the seven rays represent the seven continents and seven seas, symbolising liberty spreading across the entire world. Because of the statue’s cultural and historical importance, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. Knowing that the entire world recognises its value, we felt like we were standing before a global icon of hope and unity.

We truly felt that it was a symbol that has united people across generations. The statue continues to inspire individuals with its message of liberty, encouraging them to move forward with hope and progress.
