We recently visited the Jantar Mantar during our journey to Jaipur. It has a strong connection with shadows and the movement of the sun. Now, let us go a little deeper into our experience. As we walked around the site, we noticed that every structure had a specific shape and orientation, carefully designed for precise observation.

We were told that Jantar Mantar was built about 300 years ago. We also learnt that the word Jantar means instruments, and Mantar means calculations. We were shocked to learn how accurate the biggest sundial is, as it can tell time with an accuracy of up to 2 seconds. The smaller sundial is also designed with high precision, which clearly shows the scale and vision of the instruments. The instruments use the relationship between the sun and shadows to calculate time.

We also learnt that 21 March and 23 September are equinoxes, when the sun is above the equator, and Jantar Mantar’s instruments are built to track these special solar positions. There are five Jantar Mantars in India, located in Delhi, Jaipur, Ujjain, Varanasi, and Mathura. Among them, the Jaipur Jantar Mantar has the largest sundial. Knowing that astronomers still study these instruments today made the site feel even more important and alive.

Overall, the experience was really fun and educational. We especially enjoyed making our own sundial, which quickly turned into a friendly competition. Jantar Mantar is a timeless scientific site filled with many interesting facts and secrets. It was a memorable learning experience for all of us.
