The Golden Temple is a sacred shrine located in Amritsar, Punjab. The exterior of the temple is covered with gold, making it more attractive. We also learnt that it is a major tourist destination with people from all over the world coming for a visit.
In the temple premises, one is not supposed to enter with their hair uncovered. So we were provided with a cloth to cover our head. The temple features continuous bhajans which were being sung in the background, with plenty of space to sit and sing along. The sacred pond, called the Amrit Sarovar, surrounds the Golden Temple adding to the attraction of the place. Devotees often bathe in the Sarovar to seek spiritual blessings. We also came across the langar service where free food was being prepared and served to all the people who visited the Golden Temple. There were also a number of shops which surrounded the sacred temple.
We had a great experience visiting the Golden Temple. The guide pointed out the fact that the sacred temple is located on a level below the ground level, which symbolizes a humble way of life. The temple gates were open to all and we noted the diversity of visitors. Not only Sikhs, but many Hindus, Muslims, and foreigners had also come to visit the Golden Temple. Overall, with the hymns being played in the background, the environment was soothing.
The Golden Temple holds a lot of significance in Sikhism. We were amazed to be there. We enjoyed our visit and learnt a lot about this holy site.
