Ranthambore, known for its vast dry deciduous forests, beauty, and culture, is also home to one of India’s most famous tiger reserves. It supports a significant population of Bengal tigers and many other wild species. Ranthambore covers about 1,334 sq. km as a national park and forms part of a larger tiger reserve that includes buffer areas.

Also known as the tiger country, the entire park consists of dry tropical forests, lakes, streams, rocky terrain, and grass meadows that gave us a spectacular safari experience. Recent census counts have estimated 71 tigers here. One of the most prominent tigresses who lived in Ranthambore was Machli. She was also referred to as the “Tigress Queen of Ranthambore” and “Lady of the Lake”. We learnt how she helped boost the park’s tiger population and drew visitors from around the world with her strength and hunting skills. Machli lived for 19 years, with a fan following from all over the world, the reason being her ferocious hunting skills and majestic appearance.

During our safari, we spotted many animals, including one of the largest tigers in Ranthambore, named Jai. We learnt that the park has gained popularity for its vast culture and rich wildlife diversity, including leopards, sloth bears, jackals, deer, and over 270 species of birds. We also visited the Dastkar NGO for handicrafts made entirely by the locals.

In short, Ranthambore is a lovely place to be visited and explored, especially for animal enthusiasts. Ranthambore National Park supports a thriving population of Bengal tigers and will continue to do so with ongoing conservation and community efforts.
