We were amazed to witness the grandness of the Mysore Palace. It is the official residence of the Wadiyar dynasty that ruled the kingdom of Mysuru from 1399 to 1950. It was built to replace a wooden fort of the Wadiyars that burned down in 1896. The original fort is believed to have been built by Yaduraya of the Wadiyar dynasty in the 14th century. The present Mysore Palace was completed in 1912 at a cost of Rs 41 lakhs approximately. The present price comes close to $30 million.
We took an educational tour of the palace and its surroundings. There was also a large colourful Dravidian temple adjoining the palace. There were also gardens and statues of animals. The statues of tigers and elephants near the palace were interesting. The view from the palace courtyard was also stunning. There was a large beautifully decorated lawn in front of the palace.
We learnt that the city of Mysuru is also known as the cultural capital of Karnataka. The city is known for its historic heritage as well as for its cosmopolitan outlook. In Mysuru, all religions have co-existed in harmony for many centuries. Mysuru was formerly known as Mysore and it was renamed in 2014. It is the second fastest-growing city in Karnataka after Bengaluru. Mysuru boasts of a royal heritage, many important monuments, and truly magnificent buildings.
In addition to the Mysore Palace, we also visited the Chamundeswari Temple located atop the Chamundeswari Hill. We loved exploring the city of Mysuru and look forward to visiting it again soon.
