Auschwitz Camp in Poland is the reason for the death of millions of Jews. Hearing the stories was painful, but imagining living them was even more difficult. These stories, which silenced our hearts, emerged from the cities of Kraków and Auschwitz in Poland, Europe. They still hold the traumatising memories of the Jews who were killed in the concentration camps.
The sight of the Auschwitz concentration camp truly made our hearts skip a beat. We learnt that Auschwitz was the largest and most notorious Nazi concentration and extermination camp. People were brought here by trains from all over Europe, only to be forced into the deadly gas chambers. We learnt that it was Hitler’s strategy to build such gas chambers. The camp dates back to 1940, when it was established in Nazi Germany. It later became the central site of the Holocaust, where over 1.1 million people were systematically killed.
We were informed by our guide that the Auschwitz concentration camp was divided into two parts. The living conditions in the camp were unhygienic and appalling. At that time, imprisoned Jewish people were forced to live in horse stables and bunk beds. Rooms were cramped, with around 30 people in one room. Inmates were not allowed to use the washroom more than twice a day, and each time only for thirty seconds. People suffered immensely in these chambers, enduring extreme pain.
Auschwitz stands as a chilling reminder of the horrors of hatred and genocide. It symbolises the immense suffering endured by millions during the Holocaust. Remembering its history is vital to ensure that such atrocities never happen again. Our visit to the Auschwitz concentration camp taught us the importance of humanity, tolerance, and the need to stand against cruelty and injustice.
