There was a time when a British hunter named Jim Corbett hunted several man-eating tigers and leopards in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. Later, Jim Corbett became a passionate conservationist and played a key role in establishing Hailey National Park in 1936. The park was eventually renamed Jim Corbett National Park in 1955–56 in his honour. We learnt that this park is India’s oldest national park and a major centre for wildlife conservation. This historic forest is where our adventure truly began.

Our Journey Mentor, Shivam Sir, woke us up early at around 4:30 a.m. Although we were still sleepy, we got ready and travelled by bus to the safari entry point, where we switched to gypsies. At the entry, we saw a detailed map of the park that highlighted different zones and habitats where animals are usually seen. We learnt that the park has seven safari zones to promote tourism and allow visitors to observe wildlife from close range without disturbing the natural habitat. We were amazed to discover that each zone supports specific species. Our group was excited to get a glimpse of the majestic tiger.

As we entered the park area, we first sighted a spotted deer with its herd. While crossing a shallow river, we noticed dense fog surrounding us, as it was extremely cold. Slowly, as the fog lifted, the forest opened up, revealing tall trees all around us. We spotted a barking deer and a larger sambar deer. Our guide shared interesting facts about the forest and showed us territorial markings of its mightiest predators. We were thrilled to spot fresh tiger pugmarks as well. As the safari came to an end, we drove out of the forest, carrying memories worth reliving. We returned to our routine lives, but the experience of Corbett’s wilderness stayed with us.
