Yo yo yo, yo what’s up? Recently, we all visited Agra on an educational journey. Agra is a city where history seems to rise from stone, from the ethereal white marble of the Taj Mahal to the commanding red sandstone walls of Agra Fort and the deserted imperial capital of Fatehpur Sikri. We all know about the Taj Mahal, but do you know about the Agra Fort? Let us take a look at its history.

Agra Fort is a huge Mughal-era fort located on the banks of the River Yamuna. Guess what? It took four rulers to complete the entire fort. Emperor Akbar began its construction in 1565 and completed it around 1573, although later rulers added their own touches.

The fort is filled with stories hidden for centuries. Our tour guide told us that Agra Fort is where Shah Jahan was kept after he was captured by his son, Aurangzeb. We learnt that he spent his final years admiring the Taj Mahal from the fort. We were amazed to know that the Taj Mahal is visible from a specific area of Agra Fort, mainly from the Musamman Burj, where Shah Jahan was kept. Among its marvels is the Diwan-e-Aam, where emperors once heard petitions from common people, and the Diwan-e-Khas, where private meetings were held. The Sheesh Mahal, or mirror palace, is beautifully decorated with reflective glasswork, while the Khas Mahal served as a private family area.

Agra Fort is full of wonders, including defensive features such as wall openings once used to pour hot water or oil on attackers. The fort remains living proof of Agra’s rich cultural heritage. We believed that visiting the fort helped us appreciate the depth of Mughal history.
