After an eight-hour-long bus ride to Jaipur, we were awed at the sight of the massive Amber Fort. The fort overlooks an artificial lake called Maota Lake. The bus stopped at a distance from the entrance to the fort. In the scorching heat, we climbed a long flight of stairs and met our tour guide at the fort.

The fort had many gardens, marvellous architecture, and numerous rooms. The Diwan-i-Aam (meeting hall for common people) and Diwan-i-Khas (meeting hall for nobles and special guests) were some of the many striking features of the place. The fort was built using red sandstone and marble, which is a great example of Rajput and Mughal architecture. It was a very beautiful piece of work, its highlights being the Sheesh Mahal as well as the detailed carvings. The Sheesh Mahal, also called the Mirror Palace, has thousands of tiny mirrors fixed onto the walls and ceilings that shine when light falls on them. Nearby was the Sukh Niwas, which means “Hall of Pleasure.” It was used as a private royal chamber and summer retreat inside the Amber Fort complex.

The fort’s craftsmanship showed great skill in stone and glass work, and the walls echoed Jaipur’s rich history. Learning about Raja Man Singh I, who began the fort’s construction, and later rulers like Raja Jai Singh helped us understand their vision to build and rule wisely. It was a very enjoyable and enlightening experience. Amber Fort is a great destination, totally recommended, and worth spending an afternoon.
