Wagah Border: Where Two Countries Unite

The highlight of our trip to Amritsar was our visit to the Wagah Border. Despite our exhaustion from travelling, the encouragement from our teachers and Edterra Edventures team fueled us for this destination.

Indian Independence Act of 1947, passed by the British Parliament on July 15, 1947, stipulated the partition of India into two sovereign dominions: the Union of India and the Dominion of Pakistan. In the same year, Sir Cyril Radcliff, a British official, was appointed to divide the borders between British-ruled India into two independent nations: one with a Hindu majority (India) and the other predominantly Muslim (Pakistan). This historic partition led to the establishment of the Wagah Border, the road border between India and Pakistan. The border is named after a village in Pakistan located on the old Grand Trunk Road that connects Amritsar and Lahore.

Wagah Border is also renowned for its elaborate “Retreat Ceremony,” a daily event held at the border gate before sunset. Both sides of the border attract a large audience to witness this emotionally charged ceremony. The crowds, filled with nationals from both countries, express their fervent patriotism, evident in the spirited hooting during the parades.

Wagah Border is a unifying force, bringing people from both countries together. It warmly welcomes both Hindus and Muslims and individuals from various other religions.
