When we think of Jaipur, the vibrant pink city of India, one of the first places that comes to mind is Jantar Mantar. It is an extraordinary astronomical observation site that we got the opportunity to explore. We found out that it was built in 1728 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. Now, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site and shows India’s rich scientific history as one of the largest and best-preserved observatories.
We learnt that Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II was a devoted student of astronomy and constructed multiple observatories in North India. The observatory in Jaipur is one of the largest and best-preserved of them all. As we wandered through Jantar Mantar, we were greeted by 19 impressive instruments, including the world’s largest sundial, the Samrat Yantra. This remarkable structure allows us to measure time accurately and observe celestial bodies. We can’t help but marvel at the genius of Maharaja Jai Singh II, who combined art and science to create these stunning instruments.
As we stroll through the grounds, we feel a sense of connection to the past and the brilliant minds that contributed to our understanding of the universe. Jantar Mantar is not just a historical site, it’s a place where we can learn, reflect, and appreciate the marvels of astronomy.
