Block printing is an old form of art mainly found in Jaipur. It has been passed down from many generations. It is a unique form of art which allows everyone to express themselves creatively.
The art of hand block printing is a way that involves using pointed and carefully carved blocks to create patterns on cloth pieces. The blocks that we used were carved out of seasoned teakwood. It includes different patterns such as that of flowers and mandala art. We learnt that the dyes used for handblock printing are extracted from natural resources and minerals. Therefore, these dyes are harmless and are of non polluting nature.
The activity of block printing helped us to relieve stress and express our creativity. It also allowed us to explore the different forms of art and enhance our skills. People of all ages can indulge in this activity. We were told by our guide that block printing activity started from the Indus Valley Civilisation. Now, this art is being practised in different places such as Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.
In nutshell, block printing is an old and creative form of art. During the activity, we also felt that the process of block printing requires a lot of patience. Families from all over India come to visit Jaipur to take part in this activity. For us, the experience was joyful and relaxing. Tourists can express their feelings via colourful block prints and create patterns of birds, animals, and geometric designs. The art of block printing reflects the country’s cultural heritage and traditional craftsmanship.
