Nestled in the foothills of the Aravalli range, Alwar stands as a remarkable treasure of Rajput history and cultural richness. Travellers often visit places such as Bhangarh Fort, Bala Qila, and the Sariska Tiger Reserve, but the city also hides quieter gems that are equally captivating. One such place is the beautiful Moosi Maharani ki Chhatri, a photogenic and spiritually significant corner of Alwar.

Moosi Maharani ki Chhatri is a magnificent cenotaph built in 1815. It was constructed by Maharaj Vinay Singh in memory of his father, Maharaja Bakhtawar Singh and his queen, Maharani Moosi, who committed sati. The cenotaph really impressed us. It has two floors, with red sandstone below and white marble above, making it a beautiful example of Indo-Islamic design. Its interiors feature detailed frescoes depicting royal life, battles, folktales, and stories from the region. These artistic elements reflect the devotion, architectural skill, and cultural depth of Rajputana.

After exploring the cenotaph, we visited Sagar Lake, located behind the City Palace. We learnt that it is an artificial lake that historically served the royal household. Our guides explained that the lake was once used as a bathing area for the royals and also functioned as an important water source. We also explored various entertainment areas within the complex, including traditional puzzles that once engaged and amused the royal families.

Inside the City Palace, we discovered that the structure was built in 1793 by Vinay Singh in memory of the Maharaja and the queen. The palace, along with the cenotaph and the lake, reflects Alwar’s rich blend of history, artistry, and heritage. Our visit helped us appreciate the city’s deep cultural roots and its lasting connection to Rajput traditions.
