Do you know where one of the largest monolithic structures in the world is located? It’s the Kailasa Temple, located in the magnificent Ellora Caves. After our journey to the caves, we are excited to share our experience about one of the world’s most prolific ancient wonders.

The Ellora Caves, locally known as “Verul Leni,” is home to 34 rock-cut monasteries and temples, located in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district of Maharashtra. The caves are a symbol of religious tolerance and cultural diversity as they represent 3 major religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.

The caves share a mesmerising scene of architectural beauty and are a formidable feat of construction. Situated in the Deccan Trap, the caves were carved from volcanic basalt rock. We were amazed by the fact that while carving the Kailasa Temple, the artists removed approximately three million cubic feet of stone that weighed around 200,000 tonnes. It stimulates the creative imagination of artists and proves that even without modern technology, true art comes from the soul and pure devotion of the artist. It’s nothing short of a marvel how uniquely the temple is carved from a single rock, starting from the top to the bottom. The centuries-long perseverance of artists can be clearly seen in the magnificence of the Ellora Caves.

In a nutshell, our trip took us through the history of the marvellous Ellora Caves of the Sahyadri Hills. The caves stand as a testament to the remarkable architectural expertise and craftsmanship of ancient builders. The Ellora Caves keep reminding us of the need to explore and learn more about the beautiful wonders of India.
