Nestled in the heart of the Pink City, Jaipur, Jantar Mantar stands as a testament to India’s rich astronomical heritage. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a collection of architectural and astronomical marvels that have amazed visitors for centuries. It is also a great place to learn about astronomy and its influence on Indian culture. The site is famous for its intricate astronomical calculations, which were used to accurately determine the date and time of certain events.

Built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in the early 18th century, Jantar Mantar was designed to serve scientific and astrological purposes. Jai Singh, a keen astronomer, desired to create a site that would house remarkable instruments for accurate celestial investigation, which turned out to be a successful project undertaken by him.

The horoscope is important to determine one’s Zodiac sign, and to know the Zodiac sign of a person, you need the birth date and the time of birth. These instruments, also called Rashivalaya Yantra, were used for this purpose. The position of the sunlight falling on the yantra at a specific time would reveal the Zodiac sign. Notably, Jantar Mantar is home to the world’s largest stone sundial.

Our experience at Jantar Mantar was excellent, and we marvelled at the science and thought process involved in developing such a wonderful creation over centuries ago. The final activity of the day involved making our own sundial. EdTerra’s thoughtful planning made the journey a success with lots of pleasant memories.
