A Day by Day Adventure Summary

day 1:

The Universe and Us - Finding our roots From the big bang to the present day, the Universe has changed a lot. Campers will get a basic introduction to the Universe & the Solar system and understand how things move in the solar system. They will get to know about the size of everything in the Universe, both big and small. Campers will learn about the history and development of astronomy and space science and how it has changed our lives with examples such as how the moon phases guide our festivals, the way sowing and reaping of crops depends on position of stars and Earth’s revolutions, and many more. A guided workshop takes students through the minutest details of the working of light buckets, commonly known to us as Telescopes. At the end of day one, the campers will assemble their own personal telescopes and immediately use them. They will step out to observe the Moon in the night sky. Congratulations for that first step into the world of Amateur Astronomy.

day 2:

Mission to the Moon – The Apollo Legacy Today, we spend time admiring and learning about our nearest neighbor. This is the only place in the Universe where humans have set foot. The Apollo missions showcased the technological capability and the dedication towards exploration which we have amassed over the years. Following the footsteps of the Apollo astronauts, campers will also learn the basics of rocket science and understand that how this technology has given us the power to go beyond the cradle of Earth and into the vastness of space. They will design their own rockets and experience for themselves how scientists learned the intricacies of rocket science. Students will plan their own space mission and will learn about the obstacles faced by humans in the quest to reach space. Powerful hands-on activities help them appreciate the dynamics and the nature of calculations involved in planning space missions. Various simulations equip the campers with a real time experience of exploration as they learn about various missions that have been sent to the Red planet to explore the possibility of life on its surface.

day 3:

SUN-Day – Celebrating our Parent or the Papa Star The SUN, also known as the ultimate source of energy is the brightest object in the sky. For thousands of years our existence, the importance of the star and how it controls the delicate balance of life on the planet has been well understood by cultures around the world. Campers understand the composition, features and working of the Sun in detail. We also bust various ancient to modern-day myths that have generally kept people in the dark about the harmful effects of viewing the Sun directly. Campers learn the safest methods and techniques to observe the Sun, use it to calculate time and to find direction. All these techniques can come in handy at any time in their life.

day 4:

Life in the Universe – Alone! Are We? Time and again we ask ourselves this question. Are we alone in this universe or is there any other intelligent civilization or even the simplest life form from any part of the Universe. If they exist and are intelligent, are they aware of our existence or are they riddled the same way. Maybe they visit us all the time. Who knows? This day, campers discuss in detail, the possibility of life in local vicinity of the Earth and beyond as they go on a treasure hunt around the campsite and take a closer look at the planets of the Solar System through powerful telescopes observing their features in great detail.

day 5:

Cosmic Quest – Window to the Universe The beauty of the night sky mesmerizes each and every one of us. Further, a sky studded with stars takes our imagination into distant worlds. It is fascinating how the clockwork precision of the heavens above makes everything look so dreamy. What makes it even more interesting is the coordinated motion and the movement of planets, asteroids and the Moon with the backdrop of stars. This day, campers get to understand what governs this movement and learn to master the navigation of the night sky with the help of techniques which have been in use for ages now, combined with the new age instruments and methods. They get introduced to various precision instruments that will enhance the way the campers observe the Universe as they document their experience in their Astronomer’s Journal.

day 6:

Closing Ceremony The last day of the camp is dedicated towards adventure and recognition. Teams go on a treasure hunt and find the wonders of the Universe. While on the journey, they compete, solve riddles and earn prizes while exploring the area. On returning to back to base camp, a festive environment welcomes them where they participate in games, challenges and activities based on Astronomy and space science. Victorious teams and exceptional individual participation earns recognition while all the rest take home memories and mementos.
